Closing Michigan’s Construction Talent Gap: Infrastructure Employers Pave the Way

Written by Heather Smith | Jun 22, 2017

Across the entire supply chain, from raw materials to the completed project, Michigan’s construction industry is facing an unprecedented construction talent gap. The construction workforce development pipeline is broken. Home builders, in particular are claiming worker shortage is reaching crisis level.

Sooner to emerge from the Great Recession, road builders and heavy highway contractors began feeling this labor pinch in 2015. As the hunt for skilled labor become an ever increasingly difficult challenge, infrastructure companies started creating their own talent pipeline. During this same year a group of infrastructure employers united and began paving the way for what is becoming the Michigan Construction movement.

It is easy to see from the Michigan Construction Partners page, that the infrastructure segment of construction is well represented. This should be no surprise knowing many of these companies are leaders in the Michigan Concrete Association, Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association and the Asphalt Paving Association of Michigan.

These companies know the only way to build a road is by working together. They take the same approach when building a workforce.

Soon other construction companies joined who are leaders from other Tier 1 associations: Associated General Contractors of Michigan, the Construction Association of Michigan, and Associated Builders and Contractors.

The Home Builders Association of Southeast Michigan, the largest of 24 local HBA’s, has recently partnered with Michigan Construction to connect their statewide residential construction jobs board www.HBAConstructionCareers.com to MichiganConstruction.com.

Only by uniting under a single effort can we close Michigan’s construction talent gap.

The first of MichiganConstruction’s partners saw that by banding together they can lay the foundation to inspire and attract people to construction. The Your Future Awaits campaign has been seen over 37-million times and counting.

Michigan Construction links to a full spectrum of education and training resources from the Greater Michigan Construction Academy to the Detroit Carpentry Joint Apprenticeship School. We link to our Employer Partners offering career opportunities throughout Michigan’s construction supply chain. Our links grow every week as Michigan Construction gains more and more valued partners. Soon MichiganConstruction.com will be the one-stop-spot for construction career information.

Just as building roads and bridges, houses or hospitals, working together with the Michigan Construction movement, companies can collaborate to drive solutions building the best and brightest pool of talent for Michigan’s construction industry.
