2nd Annual Apprenticeship EXPO - November 14, 2017

Written by Heather Smith | Nov 7, 2017

The goal of the Expo is to help people find a gateway into Apprenticeship programs. The event will feature hands-on exhibits in several skilled trades, allowing attendees to experience how people do their jobs as carpenters, electricians, bricklayers, masons, iron workers, roofers, and welders. Simulators for heavy equipment (truck) operators, virtual design computers and apprenticeship resources will also be part of the Expo.  Download Brochure

Detroit, MI, November 2, 2017--The Partnership for Diversity and Opportunity in Transportation will host its 2nd Annual Apprenticeship Expo on Tuesday, Nov 14, 2017, 4-7 PM at Randolph Career & Technical Center, 17101 Hubbell, Detroit, MI, as part of National Apprenticeship Week www.MiRoad2Work.org.

The event is free and open to the public. The Opening Reception will kick-off the Expo at 4 pm.

All skilled trades professions are experiencing record worker shortages. Detroit has about 65 developments that will require 51% city worker employment. In addition, infrastructure projects to help build city and state roads, and water systems will kick-off next Spring. Both scenarios heighten the need to hire more Detroiters into the rapidly growing construction industry.

“This city is going through an exciting road and building construction renaissance, and we need more Detroiters in the skilled trades employment pipeline,” said MDOT Metro Region Engineer, Tony Kratofil. “We hope this Expo will help answer the question we hear on so many construction sites, ‘How can I get a job doing that?’”

Apprenticeships offer an ‘earn while you learn’ training model that combines work-based learning with classroom instruction using the highest industry standards. For many years, the popular mantra was “go to college” but college debt and high college drop-out rates demonstrate that college is not for everyone, and skilled trades can provide a viable career option.

According to the Department of Labor, the average pay for an apprentice in skilled trades is $18 an hour, and after 3-4 years of training, salaries start at $45,000 annually. Skills learned in the trades are transferable to entrepreneurship and management, and can never be outsourced.

The 2nd Annual Apprenticeship Expo is made possible through its partners: Barton Malow, Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Cadillac Asphalt, City of Detroit, Construction Association of Michigan, Detroit Public Schools Community District, Laborers’ Local 1191, MDOT, MITA, and The Prewitt Group.
