National Apprenticeship Week 2016: Michigan Events

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to participate in an apprenticeship program instead of attending a college or university? National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is targeted towards people just like you — to help you discover what can be achieved with the #other4yeardegree. During last year’s NAW, more than 300 events took place in 47 States. NAW 2016 will be even bigger, with almost 400 events planned  — 22 of those will take place right here in Michigan. Here are a few we think you should check out.

Barton Marlow Apprenticeship Expo

"Learn What the Building Trades Have to Offer and How to Apply.”
This Apprenticeship Expo will provide information about the current requirements for apprenticeships the growing skilled trades industry in Detroit. Vendors from the Michigan Building Trades will be present, including plumbing, roofing, carpentry, electrical, ironworking, glaziers, and others. Parents of those considering apprentichships are encouraged to attend.

The Partnership for Diversity and Opportunity in Transportation is the local clearinghouse for all 2016 Detroit area apprenticeship events.

Mott Community College:
Serving the Flint Community Through ApprenticeshipUSA

On partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship and the Michigan Talent Investment Agency, Mott Community College will be celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by sharing how apprenticeships have been serving the Flint community through ApprenticeshipUSA. Speakers at the event will include: U.S. Congressman Dan Kildee, Michigan - 5th District;  Michigan’s Lt Governor Brian Calley; Mayor Dr. Karen Weaver, City of Flint; and many others. The event will culminate with a signing of New Occupation Apprenticeship Standards for the Local 85/Pipefitters & Plumbers.

Highway to High Demand Jobs, Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships

This event is designed to introduce high school students to employment opportunities and apprenticeships in the skilled. Guest speakers will explain industry demand and detail the training/skills/education that is required. The program will also include breakout sessions that will give the attending students a chance to participate in hands-on activities that are related to skilled trades.

Michigan Construction

Michigan Construction will be celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by using our Facebook page to share apprenticeship and spreading news about how apprenticeships are changing the way the next generation views their post-high school options.
